Each coloring sheet is created from a real photograph. This photo was taken by David Lumpkin in California, USA in 2019. It shows wildland fire scientist Dr. Sasha Berleman, director of the Audubon Canyon Ranch’s Fire Forward program, and firing boss Nick Chavira from the U.S. National Park Service observing a prescribed fire that they started to reduce the number of non-native plants and to promote native wildflowers and perennial grasses.
We hope you enjoyed coloring your sheet. How does it compare to the photo above? Does the photo make you think differently about the picture? Did you use different colors? We can’t wait to see everyone’s finished coloring, so be sure to share below or on social media (with your parent’s permission, of course)!
This prescribed burn took place in an area that had a lot of non-native species choking out the native flowers. The next year (2020), there were more wildflowers than they had ever seen in the area! Isn’t it cool that fire can be used as a tool to improve the health of our wildlands?
